 Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of the Twinning Association?  The official answer is “to further the friendship between our two communities”     but it has turned out to be much more than that, with firm friendships being struck between people either side of the Channel.
Isn’t the Twinning Association an excuse for local councillors to have a jolly on the  Community Charge?

Most definitely not!  The Association is self-funded.  It receives no money other than that generated as the result of its own activities.  It is nothing to do with the local council.

How many members are there in the Twinning Association?

Currently, we have 120 memberships - including whole families

What age group are the members and what sort of people are they?

We have members from babes in arms to OAPs and from all backgrounds, with no one group being dominant.
I don’t know many people in the village, won’t that be a problem?

Definitely not!  Membership of the Association is one of the best ways to widen your circle of friends.

What am I committed to if I join?

Nothing - but if you don’t join in some of the activities, you will be missing a lot of fun!

How does the Association raise its funds?

Through membership subscriptions, from a series of events throughout the year and from membership
I don’t speak any French - how can I possibly join the Association?

The English are not exactly known for their linguistic abilities - and the French are not much better.  A few of the English speak passable French, a lot speak it badly and some don’t know any at all.  The same is true of  our French friends’ grasp of English - but it doesn't seem to matter – sign language, a bit of good humour and a lot of smiles go an awful long way!

Will I be expected to host a French family?  I don’t think my house is big enough.

No - but you will be given the opportunity to stay with a French family if you want to go to France, and some of the French houses are not very big either.

What sort of family would I host?

We have a few details about all visiting families before they come and endeavour to match up age groups etc.  This is especially important for families with small children.

Who runs the Association?

The Twinning Association Committee, which is elected each year at the AGM, is open to all members.

The Committee meets about once a month, or as needed, to discuss and plan Twinning Association events and activities, and members are kept up to date via the newsletter.
